Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey
The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey
In plain words
Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours. Rekeying leaves all of that alone and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the pin stack on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a different key runs it. For hardware in good condition, that is the sensible choice: the door looks and feels as it did while the old key is retired. A worn cylinder can be replaced and keyed to match the rest in the same visit.
How the visit goesYour purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant. The cards can be cancelled by phone tonight, but the house keys were in the side pocket beside a driver's licence that shows exactly where those keys fit.

How the visit goes
Reading each cylinder before it comes off the door
Every cylinder on the list gets a close look while it is still in the door. The keyway shape and the maker's stamp tell the locksmith which pin kit fits and whether the keys can be cut on the van. The feel of the plug with a working key, if one exists, says whether the pins and springs are healthy or tired. Corrosion on the face, a wobbly plug or a key that needs a jiggle points to a cylinder that will benefit from cleaning or replacing while it is out. A homeowner-rekeyable cylinder, recognisable by its small reset slot beside the keyway, calls for a different tool and gets noted.
Handling a restricted or high-security keyway
Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.
When to think about rekeying again
Rekeying is a repeatable act, and after this visit you know what triggers it. Moving into a new home, because previous occupants and their helpers may hold copies. A contractor or tenant leaving without handing a key back. A separation or a change of roommates. A ring lost with anything that names your address. Manufacturers list exactly these moments, and a household that treats them as routine stays in control of its doors for decades with the same hardware. The locks on the door today can be repinned many more times; only the small pins and the keys change each time.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Time and day of the call
A weekday afternoon and a late evening or holiday call cost the same amount for a lost-key rekey. When a stolen wallet makes the visit urgent, the locksmith still confirms the exact figure on site, once the cylinders and keys needed have been looked at.
2Entry as well as rekeying
If the lost key was your only key and you are locked out too, the door is opened first and that opening is quoted as its own step ahead of the rekey.
3Whether the doors can share one key as they are
Cylinders from the same keyway family are pinned alike with no extra parts. A door from a different family needs a compatible cylinder swapped in if you want a single key, and that part is quoted separately.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
I live in a condominium. Which locks are mine to rekey?
Your suite door is generally the one you can act on, and it may sit on a building master system, so the locksmith plans the rekey so the master still operates while the old change key stops working. Lobby doors, the parking gate, amenity rooms and the mailroom belong to the corporation; report a lost fob or key for those to the property manager, who deactivates or reissues it. The locksmith can help sort which is which.
Can all my doors work on one key afterwards?
Usually, yes. Cylinders that share a keyway family accept the same blank, so they can be pinned to one combination during the rekey. The front door, back door, garage entry and a gate padlock of the same family become a single key. Where a door uses a different family, the locksmith can swap its cylinder for a compatible one in the same visit, or you can choose to keep two keys for that door.
My lock is the homeowner-rekeyable type but the working key is lost. Can it still be reset?
Yes. Those cylinders let an owner change the key with a small learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. Without one, a design such as Kwikset SmartKey is removed and placed in its own reset fixture, returning it to a blank state; other cylinder types are rekeyed by their own method instead. A new key is then set and the lock goes back on. It is a few extra minutes rather than a replacement.
