Things worth knowing

Whether you own, rent, manage a building or just drive, there is something here for you. Each note takes one everyday situation, explains what is going on behind the door, and sets out what a sensible next step looks like.

Frequently asked questions

Lockout Services

My key turns but the door stays locked. What is going on?

A key that spins freely without moving the bolt usually means the connection between the cylinder and the bolt has failed: the tailpiece or cam at the back of the cylinder has broken or slipped, or the internal parts of an older mortise lock have worn. The good news is that this is a hardware fault rather than a lost key, so once the door is opened the fix is a repaired or replaced cylinder and your keys keep working. Home Lockout Service

I am an employee, not the owner. Can you still open the door for me?

Yes, with the owner or a manager in the loop. Tell the locksmith who can confirm you work there and how to reach them. A call to the business owner, the regional manager or the property manager, ideally on a number that can be looked up rather than one you supply, settles it. Staff on an opening shift arrange this on the phone before the locksmith arrives so nothing waits at the door. Business Lockout Service

How long does the extraction usually take?

It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look. Broken Key Extraction

How is a forced storefront door repaired?

Aluminum storefront doors are attacked at the narrow stile, which bends under a pry bar, or at the hookbolt and glass. The locksmith straightens or replaces the damaged section where possible, fits a new narrow-stile deadbolt or hookbolt with its strike, and adds a latch guard or anti-pry astragal along the meeting edge so a bar has no purchase. Cores are rekeyed and codes reviewed. The inside release stays a single motion so the exit route is unchanged. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

What is a restricted keyway, and does it change anything?

A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are not sold to the public, so copies can only be cut by an authorized dealer from a record of who is allowed to have them. Rekeying such a cylinder is the same operation inside, but the new keys are cut from controlled blanks and the count is logged. The benefit is that a key cannot be duplicated at a kiosk without your knowledge, which makes the record of who holds one much easier to trust. Lock Rekeying

How long does a deadbolt installation take?

A replacement into existing holes is generally the shorter visit, and boring a fresh door with a new strike takes longer, roughly an hour or two per door including the frame work and testing. Steel doors, keying alike, frame repairs after a forced entry and fitting a jamb reinforcer each add time. The locksmith can give a realistic estimate once the door and frame have been looked at. Deadbolt Installation

What is a reinforced strike, and is it worth adding?

A standard strike is a thin plate held by two short screws in the jamb, and the jamb is what splits when a door is forced. A reinforced strike or strike box is heavier and is fixed with long screws that pass through the jamb into the framing, spreading the load into the structure. It is one of the most effective upgrades on any exterior door and is usually fitted as part of a deadbolt replacement. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

My home is a designated heritage property. Does that change anything?

It reinforces the choice to service rather than replace. Where a property carries a heritage designation, changes affecting listed features can need extra sign-off, and original door hardware is occasionally among those features. A rebuilt mortise case with its original trim is preservation rather than alteration, and the locksmith's written record of what was retained and what was replaced is useful for your file. High Security Locks

Will opening my safe damage it?

In most cases the lock and case are left intact, since manipulation, decoding and manufacturer reset paths all work the mechanism the way the original combination would. Drilling is kept for cases where the gentler routes are unavailable or exhausted, aimed at one small point the manufacturer marks as repairable, and patched before the visit ends; a skilled technician aims to leave the rest of the body, hinges and finish unaffected, though the outcome and any effect on the safe's rated protection level depends on its construction. Safe Opening & Combination Change

What is the difference between a mechanical dial lock and an electronic keypad?

A mechanical dial has no battery and is set by hand to a private combination, turning through a sequence to release the bolt; it never runs out of power but takes a little practice to open. An electronic keypad accepts a numeric code and can support several separate codes for different people, but it depends on a battery that eventually needs replacing. Many owners choose based on how many people need access rather than one being simply superior to the other. Safe Installation & Servicing

How do I order extra keys later?

An authorised person contacts the locksmith who holds your system, quotes the system reference, and the key is cut from code and numbered into the register. Some systems use a physical authorisation card, others an online validation, and business systems often require a signature that matches one on file. The key is collected or delivered, and the record shows the new total. It is deliberately not something a stranger with your key can do. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

What is an interchangeable core and why is it suggested for staff turnover?

A small-format interchangeable core is a small figure-eight cylinder that slides out of the lever, deadbolt or padlock when a control key is turned, with no tools needed; larger doors sometimes use a large-format core with a different profile instead. A manager keeps the control key in the safe and a few spare cores on hand, so a missing key means the core is swapped in moments and repinned later. For a business with frequent staff turnover, it turns a call-out into a routine. Commercial Rekeying

Can my existing locks be used, or do I need all new hardware?

Many existing cylinders can join a new hierarchy as they are, once their keyway and condition are confirmed compatible. Others, particularly older or mismatched hardware, are replaced so the whole system pins cleanly without cross-keying. The assessment identifies which doors fall into each group before any work begins, so the plan reflects what is actually on the property rather than assuming everything needs to change. Master Key System Design

Can a person's access change automatically by time of day or day of the week?

Yes. Access levels can be set to change automatically by time of day or day of the week, so a credential that opens a door during a shift can be denied outside it without anyone having to remember to switch it off manually. This is set up once in the schedule and then runs on its own from that point forward. Access Control Installation

What should I have ready before the visit?

Knowing the intended use of the room, roughly how many people it holds, whether any doors are already fire-rated, and whether any of them are part of a pair helps the locksmith bring the right devices. If a fire inspector or building official has already given a note about the opening, having that note or its reference number on hand keeps the visit focused on what was actually flagged. Panic & Exit Hardware

Two people beside a dark sedan, one holding up a black key fob. — Car Lockout Service, Woodstock

Car Keys

I have lost my only key. Can a locksmith make a new one at the roadside?

For most cars, yes. After the car is opened, the door cylinder is decoded to read the cuts, or the key code is drawn from the vehicle records against your proof of ownership, and a blade is cut in the van. A transponder key or fob is then programmed through the diagnostic port so the engine will start. Some newer or high-security models need dealer-only parts; you are told that up front rather than after. Car Lockout Service

Can you make a key if every key to the car is gone?

Often, yes, for vehicles with a supported conventional key system: the car is opened, a blade is produced by decoding the door lock or retrieving the factory key code, and the immobilizer is reset so the missing keys are erased before new ones are stored. A key-card or phone-key vehicle, or one needing a dealer procedure, follows its own route instead, which is why the VIN is asked for on the first call. Car Key Replacement

How long does making a spare car key usually take?

The time depends mainly on the key system rather than the blade. A plain mechanical key can often be duplicated within one visit, without extra electronic work. A transponder or remote-head key adds a cloning or programming step, done off the vehicle when the chip supports it and through the vehicle's own diagnostic port when it does not, with the diagnostic route usually taking longer. The locksmith can usually say which category your vehicle falls into once the make, model and year are known, before the appointment starts. Spare Car Key Duplication

Why do my fob's buttons work but the car still won't start?

This usually points to two separate systems handling two separate jobs: the remote's buttons operate the locks and alarm over radio, while a hidden chip in the fob authorizes the engine to start once it is recognized inside the vehicle. When one half is registered and the other isn't, or a chip has failed, the buttons keep working while starting authorization does not. Key Fob Programming
