Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.

Lock Replacement & Upgrade

In plain words

A keypad or smart lock is a lock replacement with a few extra steps, and it suits households where keys circulate widely. The locksmith fits the new deadbolt to the existing bore, checks that the bolt throws freely so the motor is never straining against a misaligned strike, sets up user codes and any phone pairing, and shows you the mechanical override and the battery warning. Because these locks still rely on a bolt and a strike, the same attention goes into the frame as for any deadbolt. You gain convenience without giving up the mechanical basics that make a door hard to force.

Sound familiar?

The keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.

How the visit goes

Woodstock

How the visit goes

  1. Measuring the existing preparation

Before any product is chosen the door is measured. Backset first, the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore, which on most doors here is 60 or 70 millimetres. Then the cross-bore diameter, the edge-bore size, the shape of the latch faceplate, the door thickness and the handing. The strike cut-out and any glass, trim or storm door that limits where hardware can sit are noted too. These few numbers decide which locks will drop straight into the door and which would need a filler plate, an extension kit or fresh drilling, so they are written down before the catalogue is opened.

  2. Mounting the cylinder and the interior side

The exterior housing goes on with its tailpiece passing through the slot in the bolt, oriented as the maker specifies so the keyway sits upright. The interior thumb-turn or rose is offered up and the two long mounting screws are drawn down evenly by hand until firm, not crushed; zinc housings distort and threads strip under a drill, and an over-tight rose makes a lever heavy forever. On thick doors, extension kits bring screws and spindle to length. A knob or lever set adds the latch spindle and the spring cage, and the handle is checked to return crisply to level before the trim is snugged.

  3. A clear plan for the remaining doors

Most households do not replace every lock in one visit, and you leave with a short list of what is left, in order of importance. Typically the front door and the garage-to-house door come first, then the back and side doors, then the patio slider and interior sets. Because the key plan has been settled, any lock added later can be pinned to the same key, so the house stays on one key as the work continues. Finishes and styles are recorded so future hardware matches. The first visit sets the standard; the rest of the house can follow when it suits you.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Authorization needed from a property manager or landlord

A rental or condominium unit sometimes needs sign-off from a property manager or landlord before a lock is changed, and new keys may need to reach more than one party afterward. Confirming who is authorized and who receives keys is worked out before the new hardware goes in.

  2. 2Condition of the old hardware

Hardware that comes off cleanly is one thing; painted-over trim, seized or stripped screws and a cylinder that has to be drilled out add time before the new lock can go on.

  3. 3Strike reinforcement and jamb repair

A reinforced strike with long screws is a modest addition; repairing a jamb split from a forced entry, or fitting a strike box into a frame that has never had one, adds labour and materials.

Lock Replacement & Upgrade: questions

What is a reinforced strike, and is it worth adding?

A standard strike is a thin plate held by two short screws in the jamb, and the jamb is what splits when a door is forced. A reinforced strike or strike box is heavier and is fixed with long screws that pass through the jamb into the framing, spreading the load into the structure. It is one of the most effective upgrades on any exterior door and is usually fitted as part of a deadbolt replacement.

Can I stop people copying my house key?

A restricted keyway helps with that. The key blanks are controlled by the manufacturer and its authorised locksmiths, so a copy generally requires the card, record or authorisation the program uses, cutting down on copies made at an ordinary kiosk. It suits homes where keys are lent to cleaners, contractors or tenants. The cylinders are fitted in the normal way, and you keep the key card safe because it is what future copies depend on.

What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?

Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone.
